The atmosphere was electric, filled with anticipation for the exciting program ahead.
Following Edward’s welcoming remarks, Ms. Lillian Cheong, JP, Under Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the Hong Kong SAR Government, took the stage to deliver inspiring and motivating opening remarks. Her words set the tone for the ceremony, highlighting efforts to promote Hong Kong’s I&T sector and propel the growth of its industries into an ecosystem that sustains scientific and technological innovation.
Alongside Edward and Lillian, we were privileged to have the esteemed presence of Mr. Li Xuhong, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Administration and Finance of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government; The Honourable Duncan Chiu, HKSAR Legislative Council Member for the Technology & Innovation Constituency; Mr. Ray Liang, Head of Portfolio Company Coverage, HSBC Innovation Banking; Mr. Bong Chan, Deloitte China Southern Region Technology, Media & Telecommunications leader; and Mr. Philip Law, Deloitte China Greater Bay Area & Hong Kong Technology Fast Program lead partner, at this momentous occasion. The opening ceremony was an awe-inspiring experience, seamlessly blending the realms of technology, creativity and style.
Besides the ceremony, the event included keynote addresses from Ray. He expressed his confidence in the ability of startups to navigate uncertain market conditions with their innovative ideas and business models and emphasised the commitment of banks to support these young companies to achieve their ambitions.
Internationally renowned as "the Oscars for high technology companies", the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Program was founded in 1995 in Silicon Valley and takes place simultaneously every year in more than 30 countries. For more than two decades, Deloitte has recognised the fastest-growing and most innovative enterprises across the technology ecosystem through the Technology Fast Program. With stringent evaluation criteria and methodology adopted since 2005, the program is one of the most objective rankings for technology, media and telecommunications enterprises.
A sub-program of Deloitte China Technology Fast, Deloitte Hong Kong Technology Fast (HKTF) and Hong Kong Rising Star (HKRS) were launched in 2017 as a platform for fast-growing, innovative local enterprises from vanguard segments including internet, software, new media, new energy, life sciences and robotics to promote their market eminence, meet successful peers, and connect with banks and VC/PE investors. This year, the program captured 70% of the qualified companies in Hong Kong.
FJDynamics, GenieBiome, PHASE Scientific International and Insilico Medicine were named 2023 Deloitte Hong Kong Technology Fast Leaders, having achieved outstanding growth and leadership status. Micro Connect and Jaguar were named 2023 Deloitte Hong Kong Rising Star Leaders for their exceptional growth, visionary leadership and ground-breaking innovations, which have surpassed all expectations.
Eleven tech companies with outstanding growth received Technology Fast awards, with eighteen other high potential companies received Rising Star awards. This year, we also granted four companies, Avant Meats, GenieBiome, On-us and Wati, awards for Tech Fast Female, recognising their achievements and continuing Deloitte's dedication to supporting female leadership.
Philip Law set the stage with incisive insights on the winners before commencing the highly anticipated awards presentation. “The winners of this year's awards should be praised for their exceptional business performance, illustrating remarkable revenue growth rates that surpassed even some of the most prominent candidates in the Chinese mainland.”
In conjunction with the event, Deloitte, in collaboration with HKUST Business School, Hong Kong Tech Fast official knowledge partner, conducted research on and interviewed Hong Kong's fastest growing tech companies to assess how Hong Kong’s I&T ecosystem has evolved over the past two years in terms of the strengths and challenges it faces, whether I&T policies are developing on the right course to achieve the expected outcomes, and what tailored action plans need to be put into place to enhance Hong Kong’s overall I&T competitiveness.
Based on the data and insights collected, the Turning innovations into wealth: How to fill the commercialisation gap in Hong Kong was published under the Tech Fast Program.
To create this important study, surveys of Hong Kong-based entrepreneurs and executives at start-ups and Hong Kong based university students were conducted in October 2023. The surveys were undertaken simultaneously with in-depth interviews with key stakeholders across Hong Kong’s I&T ecosystem.
The study explores Hong Kong's latest progress in establishing itself as a world-class I&T hub, covering the contributory factors of government and policy, R&D forces, talent and education, funding environment, business support, and culture and norms. It also assesses the challenges Hong Kong faces when converting its innovation results into commercial and industrial achievements and provides recommendations on how to bridge this commercialisation gap.
