Deloitte's presence at setting new benchmarks in telecom innovation seminar
On 28 November 2018, Telecom Asia and Questex co-chaired the One Telecom Innovation seminar and 11th Annual Telecom Asia Readers’ Choice Awards at the Mira Hotel, Hong Kong.
The event brought together around 40 telecom industry experts and executives from leading players across the Asia Pacific region, including Hong Kong Broadband, Huawei, Nokia, Cisco Systems, VMware and Ericsson, to share their views on the operational and technical challenges operators will face in their 5G strategies and other telco-related topics.
After an opening speech from the Editor-in-Chief of Telecom Asia, Allan Tan, Deloitte China Telecom, Media & Entertainment Sector Southern Region Leader Polly Lee gave the keynote speech in which she demonstrated Deloitte's thought-leadership on market trends, including our report with China Unicom—5G: Reshaping the industries.
As Polly explained, the main impact of 5G will extend from smart city, smart life and smart production to smart industry and encompass technology integration, the role of telecom operators, internet of vehicles (IoV) platforms and the 5G ecosystem itself.
Since its launch in September, "5G: Reshaping the industries" has received an enthusiastic response from readers, including many of our clients and contacts. The report considers five main themes: industry transformation and value creation through 5G; how tech integration is fostering the 5G ecosystem; the applications driving the 5G network deployment; capital considerations in ensuring a vibrant 5G market; and a case study on how 5G is set to power the 2022 Winter Olympics.
5G is not just an opportunity for telecom players to seek new revenue streams, but to thrive in the face of digital disruption; they must transform their business models to make the customer the center of everything, which will shift the direction of the market and products as well as investment.
After presenting the report and its findings, Polly joined a group of panelists to discuss 5G as an enabler of digital business transformation. According to Polly, a variety of 5G platforms have already been built and different service providers have cooperated in areas such as IoV and smart healthcare. The other panelists also mentioned digital transformation's challenges and opportunities to serve customers, and encouraged collaboration, solutions and investment; software and hardware are both important and will retain their value.
Speakers included Ben Yeung, Head of Business Development & Partnership at Hong Kong Broadband Network, Konesh Kochhal, Director of Industry Ecosystem Engagements, Strategy Marketing, Southern Pacific Region at Huawei, Stan Fiala, Global Head of Hutchison Business at Nokia, and Daniel Leung, General Manager, Enterprise Solution Development, Products & Services at Smartone.
