Teams compete over the amount and quality of litter they collect within a set time limit - this is SpoGomi, an emerging sport that originated in Japan. The new sport has seen more than 1200 events throughout Japan to date and continues to gain enough popularity to have a world championship.

The event was organized by the Well-being team of Deloitte Tohmatsu Risk Advisory. Recognizing that working at home makes team building and communications more challenging, the team knew the sporting event would help members interact and develop their mutual bonding.

Results and Going Forward

The target number of participants was originally set at 300 - this seemingly daunting goal was more than satisfied with a total of 564 people signing up, including 322 people in 63 teams on November 26 and 242 people in 48 teams on November 27.

Top teams were announced at the end of the event.

Participants’ Comments
  • Competing among teams was a lot of fun.
  • Treasure hunting! (I was exhilarated finding a bag of trash.)
  • I was not very excited prior to the event, thinking that it was only about picking up litter, but seeing the positive difference we made to the community made me feel rewarded.
  • Let’s do this in Shibuya, Shinjuku and Ueno. It would be great to clean up all these neighborhoods. These towns should offer a lot of litter for us to pick up.
