Aaron Werth has landed in the role he could have taken on decades ago. He works in audit innovation at Deloitte, making the most of how technology and new methodology can enhance our audit & assurance services.
I started out as a traditional CPA, and I found I had a knack for data. I think we had great ideas for how to use data in audit, but the world was not quite ready yet. But that’s changed. The world is ready, and the transformation is happening now.

Everything old is new again
Some things don’t change. Audit has always been looked to as enhancing trust in the capital markets. What’s new (and exciting, if you have Aaron's eye for analytics) is how the availability of data and the evolution of technology can enhance the quality and value that an audit provides. Innovating the audit is a significant opportunity—no, imperative—in business today, and it’s the moment Aaron has been waiting for since he first stumbled across data after graduating from college. An early opportunity to set up a server and database led to his discovering data analytics. He veered off the traditional audit & assurance path and began to focus on data analytics as his passion.
Technologist, business developer, educator
Being a leader in audit innovation involves a long list of activities for Aaron. On a given day, he might meet with clients in several of the industries in his purview: energy and resources, transportation, hospitality and services, and health care. He also works directly with Deloitte’s software vendors, conducts capabilities presentations, leads updates with auditors all over the country, and more. His role requires being an educator as much as anything, since part of innovating the audit means communicating to stakeholders how analytics and technology can enhance the value of what a Deloitte audit can deliver.
Asking “what if?”
Aaron loves that Deloitte is an organization that consistently strives to lead innovation rather than simply embracing it, and great ideas can come from anywhere. Proof of that commitment is the Audit Innovation Challenge, which Aaron’s team won after presenting ideas for transforming the audit to audit leadership. Among 450 submissions, his team’s idea was chosen for the prize and received funding. The outcome of that winning idea is Cortex—a data extraction, transformation, and analytics tool. For the record, he and his colleagues have more ideas where that one came from. Perhaps Aaron was ahead of his time, or maybe this is exactly the time he was made for. Either way, he’s arrived in the job that he predicted long ago ... and it’s as exhilarating as he hoped.
