Desiree Whitehead

The place where women lead. Without exception.

It wasn’t that long ago that women working in technology were rare. But I knew that was the path I would pursue, and I admired the way Deloitte had woven support for women into the very fiber of its culture. Now I work as a SharePoint Developer, which involves everything from creating and configuring sites to writing custom workflows. No matter the specific task, my job translates into more efficient and creative solutions to problems that my clients may not have the expertise to solve for themselves. Tech is still the path I want to pursue, and doing that at Deloitte allows me to learn continually in a culture that values my input. Now women in tech aren’t so rare, but as with so many things, Deloitte was on the cutting edge of that trend.

Joining in, while standing out.

I’m the first in my family to graduate from college. For all of us, immigrating to the United States from Peru was like coming to a new world, and I had little guidance along the way. But I knew one thing: I wanted to be successful. In the process of interviewing with Deloitte, though, I learned something I didn’t expect. There was no cookie-cutter definition of success. I saw an infinite number of paths among the people I met, and I saw the opportunity to create my own path. The support I receive working at Deloitte comes both from people who look like me and share similar customs with me and from people who have had a totally different life experience. What unites us is the organization’s innovative culture—the opportunity to create success together.

Jenny Turner

The power of teamwork.

Did we make an impact? It’s a question I often ask myself at the end of the day. My work typically involves working with my team to come up with new and innovative ways to solve some of our clients' most challenging problems. Recently, I was lucky enough to be asked to join a team being deployed to support a client through a crisis. Immediately upon arriving onsite, it was evident there was a need for structure, guidance, and a calming influence. Our team worked tirelessly to help the client get to a better position than when we arrived. After just a few days, we found ourselves being looked at by the executive team as partners and advisors. That kind of teamwork makes all the difference to the value we provide to our clients. It was fulfilling to see the impact we made and the confidence our guidance gave to the client. It was a great reminder of why we do what we do.

Diego Alvarez

The invisible guardians of the morning coffee run.

When you think about it, anything a company does involves some form of risk. Take all the credit card transactions that happen in a given day. For every cup of coffee purchased, there’s a series of steps—all of the things going on in the background during those milliseconds between you swiping your card and having a transaction approved. My team builds the processes that help companies make sure those steps are accurate as well as the controls that help prevent hackers from getting into your data. Our work helps give consumers confidence because we’re constantly testing, constantly sampling. And the result is helping make it safer for everyone who buys and sells … anything. The fact that I get to do this work within Deloitte means that I’m also constantly learning, and I know there’s no limit to that.

Anwesha Ray

Never stop learning. Or teaching.

Just before I joined Deloitte, I got to teach third graders in South Africa for a summer. Now, I think about all of the things I’ve learned in my job, and it inspires me to revisit those kids and teach them the “business” skills they may not learn. Unlike them, I’ve had access to consistent and invaluable support. That’s been the case since day one at Deloitte, which was during my freshman year of college. In my current role providing IT Audit Services, I get to work at the intersection of business and technology, helping our clients understand all the new tools and tech that can support their processes. Even at this early stage in my career, I get to contribute in an environment that respects all the ideas brought to the table. That’s motivating, both for what I do inside and outside of work.

Creating an inclusive culture.

Bringing my whole self to work as a gay man has never been a concern to me. In 2015, I was selected to participate as a member of the Inclusion at Deloitte Executive Action (IDEA) Committee. As part of this program, we focused on current trends that would enhance inclusion at Deloitte. Drawing on my community leadership and diversity experiences, I was able to share many ideas. Over the eight months we worked together, our group explored amazing concepts and viewpoints and presented them to the Inclusion leadership team at Deloitte University. For me, inclusion is the vehicle which enables all people to be themselves, express themselves, and realize their full potential in the workplace. From the first day I started at Deloitte back in 2004, I brought my “whole self” to work, and I have never looked back.

Prachi Soni

All assumptions challenged.

Don’t get me wrong, but my story of joining Deloitte isn’t that special. I took my first job here for the same reasons many people do: I could serve a variety of clients, work for one of the top professional services firms in the world, and pay off my student loans in the process. It just made sense. Five years with Deloitte has given me the most challenging and interesting problems to work on, intertwined with working with some of the smartest people in the business. I started in consulting with two of our biggest public sector clients, and now I get to build products while authoring innovation strategies across multiple service lines. The role that I thought seemed obvious has taken me places I never could have imagined. And now I get to build products and write innovation strategies across multiple service lines. So that straight-line trajectory I thought I was on ended up splitting out into countless directions across the whole organization. It’s been a wonderful surprise! And now my ambition about what I’ll do at Deloitte couldn’t be greater.

Cedric Kudowor

A name that needs no introduction.

I only have to mention the name Deloitte, and I immediately see recognition and respect in the eyes of people I meet. That prominence was initially attractive to me; and now that I’m a part of the organization, the reputation remains true. What people don’t always understand, though, is that audit work is about much more than spreadsheets. You have to have a specific kind of vision, the ability to look beyond the numbers to find trends and correlations. That’s perfect for me given that I tend to have a big-picture view on most things. I love stepping back to see how all the pieces fit together. That’s one of the ways we can offer value to our clients. Plus it’s a skill I’ll use frequently as I build my own reputation in this business.

Kristy Laughlin

Advising clients on how to best manage their people, processes, and IT systems.

I’ve been at Deloitte since I was an intern with the organization. Now I’m going on nine years, with experience in a variety of client engagements across the commercial and federal landscape. Today, I work for clients in the defense industry, helping them to make sure that their people, processes, and IT systems are ready for their annual financial statement audits. This is pretty essential work, even to my friends and family who don’t understand what I do in my job. Here’s how I explain it: all of us pay hard-earned dollars in taxes, and that money is used in countless ways by the federal government. Without properly accounting for those expenditures, without tight controls to secure the data, people would lose faith in the system that we all rely on. Important, right? I didn’t necessarily foresee myself working in the military space when I was a student at Virginia Tech, but working for Deloitte means I get a chance to work across many clients in industries and provide services on different projects. I get the opportunity to take what I have learned and apply it different places, which keeps me engaged and energized in my work.

A great time to be in the people business.

Someone gets the job of finding all these bright Deloitte minds you’re reading about. That’s me. And the role is a great fit, too, since I’ve always loved working with people both at work and in the community, understanding their backgrounds and interests, and investing time into them so that they find their own best fits. These days, I’ve been working on a project looking at the overall recruiting experience for our candidates. It’s causing me to challenge my own assumptions and think outside of the tactics and programs we’ve used in the past. Embracing change is no small task, for any group in any organization, but I’m getting to see the project all the way through implementation, which gives me even more opportunity to learn, influence others, and change behavior. It’s a study of people and personalities, in and of itself, and it also means there’s never a dull moment.

During my interviews at Deloitte, every person I met was smart, fun, and confident. I immediately wanted to join. Working at Deloitte, I have the challenge of helping our clients reimagine and rebuild their systems to serve their customers better. It’s work that scales to enormous proportion—one project required us to build an enterprise resource planning system that served 250 million unique consumers monthly. Needless to say, it had to be right. Deloitte gives me endless opportunities to put my passion for technology to use and to grow by learning from both my clients and my teammates. To this day, they are just as smart, fun, and confident as when I first walked through the door.

Reimagining client interactions.

Collaborating with teammates and client leadership to help reimagine customer experiences allows me the unique opportunity to see the 360-degree impact of emerging technologies on my clients’ businesses. Recently, I supported a team responsible for envisioning, building, and ultimately launching a new line of business. From employee management to service tracking, we enabled a variety of capabilities that helped our client provide competitive services in a new market while growing and onboarding new acquisitions. Through this experience, we worked closely with clients to understand their vision and become trusted advisors throughout this process.

Where tech heals.

Monday mornings I hit the road … or the skies. My clients are health care organizations all over the country, and it’s my job to help them understand and implement tech into their business of delivering and managing care. Unlike before, technology now often leads the business of hospitals and health care systems. It’s radically changing what they can do for patients and their members, and for the health of the overall population. This work is less about “changing passwords” and more about designing new tools that take advantage of artificial intelligence or the cloud to provide better care. I’m motivated every day in knowing that my efforts toward helping solve complex health care problems has a major impact on millions of people’s daily lives. At Deloitte, I have the freedom to make my career my own, try different areas within the organization, while enjoying the benefits of an organization that’s invested in me. It’s pretty great.

Whitney Horner

Meet a navigator in a sea of change.

I start my day with some sort of workout (a run, a gym class, anything to get me going!) and that’s the alone time I need to get my thoughts together and get me ready for the day! I’ve spent my entire career at Deloitte and I’ve gotten to work with smart and effective thinkers on each and every team I’ve been a part of. I love being around people—working together, collaborating over tough problems, and leveraging each other’s strengths. I get to do plenty of that in my role at Deloitte, helping clients find a strategic vision and then take the steps to help them enact it. I’ve done this most recently for insurance and health care organizations trying to navigate the enormous changes in their “simple” business of taking care of people. Knowing that what I do may ultimately improve the experiences of their members and customers makes me proud.

Safer transportation, high and low.

I’ve been a technologist all my life. I got my first computer at age 12, at a time when personal computers were first being introduced. I was fortunate to have parents who saw and supported my early fascination with technology and security, even when those interests were mischievous … like looking for ways around their security measures. Now that we’re in the digital age, I see the need for enhanced and seamless security everywhere I look—from the advent of autonomous vehicles to airlines, restaurants, and other consumer-facing companies. And I get to advise our clients, who become more of a target every day as they continue to push the boundaries of digital innovation and information collection and use. You could say that it’s the job I was born for. And throughout my journey, I’ve had the honor of mentoring others with similar passions and continue to be excited about growing our future leaders. You never know what the next 12-year-old is envisioning for the future.

Noreen Cohen-White

A short-term stint turned permanent.

I didn’t plan to work at Deloitte for a long time. That was 22 years ago. I started here as an intern while I was studying for my MBA. I worked in the call center, providing tech support. If you think that sounds like a monotonous job, think again. What I learned there became the very reason I’ve stayed for so long: I was constantly challenged to learn new technologies, and I was given the support I needed to do that well. Fast forward years later, and I still find myself challenged every day, in a way that keeps me intrigued and grateful. I’m particularly proud of leading the hospitality systems implementation and integration for the Deloitte University campus buildout. These systems support guest check in/out, point-of-sale, sales/catering, and integration with core back-end systems. That project came with huge expectations, thanks to the top-notch experience we strive for, but that also made our success that much sweeter.

Finding the human side of transformation.

I have a job that’s centered on helping clients get the most out of their people by helping them create an irresistible culture for their organizations. In the same way, I want our clients to get the best from me. That’s why my team works hard to be viewed as trusted advisors to our clients. That’s pretty important given the kinds of enterprise transformation projects I work on. These can be game-changing, status quo-challenging endeavors that require a lot of courage from clients and a lot of empathy from us. We should put ourselves in their shoes to help them navigate the process. What I love about Deloitte is that I learn a little more about the business problems I’m most interested in every time I start a new project. I get to make connections between one client’s challenge and another to help find a solution that works, and I get to do it for completely different kinds of clients. Already, I’ve helped solve complex problems for clients in defense, national security and in the civilian world. The variety is energizing, and I know I’m only getting started.

Data made to tell a story.

I start my morning by walking the dogs. It’s one of the few low-tech things I do in my day, given that I work in analytics and data visualization. Deloitte is my second career, of sorts, which I pursued after working in technology sales and then completing my master’s in analytics. I knew it would be a relevant and marketable career path, but I can’t say that I envisioned one of the first places I would put my skill set to use would be with Deloitte. It was just after Hurricane Harvey hit Houston and Deloitte had set up an emergency store of supplies for employees who were flooded and displaced by the storm. While unloading supplies, I recognized a way to use data visualization to help the local recovery team understand the impact the storm had on the Houston employee population. I was able to build a data model and dashboard giving the recovery team insight into who was impacted, those employees’ safety, function, and location. It meant getting our resources deployed more efficiently and returning to normal life faster. I get to do the same for clients in less stormy, but nonetheless high-stakes, situations.

Lauren Nakabayashi

Balancing work and family.

At home, I have two adorable kids — a three-year-old daughter and a nine-month-old son — who keep my husband and me on our toes every day. At work, my teams and clients are my work family. We work together to lead project engagements and to help clients enhance the value of their internal audit functions. The dynamics of client service, complex project execution, and two “kiddos” under the age of four, makes for an ever-evolving to-do list. Fortunately, the medical and family leave benefits at Deloitte are unmatched. In my experience, there is no greater demonstration of Deloitte's long-term commitment to me than affording me the ability to stay home with my new baby and family for six months. The autonomy that Deloitte offers enables me to customize my career with projects I find engaging, maintain variety, and most importantly, design a work life that best serves my family and me.

Motivator by day.

I’m a dad / superhero to two kids, so motivating people is something I do starting very early in the morning. It’s a job I’m pretty comfortable with, being many years into my position as a Talent Acquisition professional for Deloitte. A stand-out moment for me came five years ago when I saw the opportunity to start a symposium for career center professionals. I pitched the idea to our leadership, and before I knew it, we were off and running. The end result was the ability to create Deloitte influencers from key college campuses and ultimately find and hire many more fantastic candidates from around the country. And if talent is the single most essential element to successful business, that outcome is priceless.
