As a consultant in Deloitte's Public Sector practice, you’ll help apply leading business principles so tax dollars are put to work with efficiency, accountability and transparency for some of our nation’s most needed services. As a consultant focused on the public sector, you’ll use your graduate degree and prior experience to help address a wide range of complex, challenging issues that face public and not-for-profit agencies, both day-to-day and long-term. Our practice areas include:
- Defense and intelligence
- Finance and administration
- Health and human services
- Homeland security
- Law and justice
In these practices, you’ll be part of a collaborative project team that helps our clients find solutions to address some of their most critical challenges. In fact, you’ll help develop solutions and policies that can help transform the way government does business. While the work you do may not always be in the public’s view, you can help make a difference.
What we look for
Qualified candidates for consultant or senior consultant will possess the following characteristics/attributes:
- MPA or MPP degree
- Solid history of achievement in school and work
- Strong analytical skills
- Leadership and team-building capabilities
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Availability to travel (required)
- US Citizenship with ability to obtain US Government clearance (for Federal candidates)
Our consultant and senior consultant positions are primarily differentiated by the level of applicable skills and knowledge, as well as years of relevant work experience prior to your graduate school studies. Consultants typically have one to two years of previous work experience, while senior consultants have three to four years of relevant work experience. In these positions, you will take the knowledge you have developed in your graduate studies and prior experience and apply them by working with provider organizations, health plans, and pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or medical device companies. During your first two to three years you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of assignments that reflect the range of services we provide and public sectors we serve.
1-2 years - Develop conclusions from analysis; take responsibility for creating and leading portions of deliverable
2-4 years - Lead and evaluate analysis to draw conclusions and develop insightful recommendations and solutions; design deliverable content
3-6 years - Plan and manage moderately complex engagements; structure, review and validate analysis and recommendations
4-6 years - Provide overall engagement management; integrate recommendations into a solution for the client
Serve as a trusted advisor to senior client executives; identify sales opportunities; direct engagement management

The Consultant Training Program helps you develop the “hard” skills needed to understand clients’ problems and formulate thoughtful recommendations, and practice the “soft” skills needed to develop strong internal and external relationships. Part of the learning is through a week-long simulation working with a team of peers to solve a real business problem.
The Senior Consultant Training Program includes seminars on how to manage change, ask the right questions as consultants, framing discussions, and persuasion techniques. Participants work in teams on a simulated client engagement to solve many common client challenges.
