For many, cloud is no longer an option—it is becoming inevitable. But cloud strategies differ broadly based on the context of your organization. Organizations considering a move to cloud computing may need to embrace a different approach, and failing to establish a plan and framework for deployment may lead to challenging implementations. Drivers such as deployment planning, risk tolerance, and the way companies do business tend to predict your organization’s implementation pace and scope, as well as the technologies you need. Yet cloud strategies may not account for an organization’s cloud maturity level after deployment. When we talk about cloud maturity, we are trying to understand what organizations are doing after deployment.
Organizations migrating to cloud technologies may want to consider or understand their future needs. According to AWS,¹ a cloud maturity assessment exercise can cover the people, process, and technology aspects to help design a plan to advance the organization up the maturity model, aiding in reducing risk and uncertainty. Once deployment is over, where do organizations go from there? Deloitte conducted a technology deployment survey with Forbes Insights to better understand what differentiates successful cloud deployments from the rest when it comes to cloud maturity.
In the survey, 557 senior leaders were asked about their experiences with recent cloud deployments. In order to define cloud maturity for these organizations, a comparison was made between companies with full-cloud stack and those with a mixed stack. This includes on-premises and private cloud solutions.
The survey revealed that 39 percent of respondents had implemented cloud solutions enterprise-wide and all their technology solutions were in the cloud, either private or public. This includes development testing, production servers, applications, and data. While 32 percent of respondents had made significant progress and investment in their move to the cloud, with the intention of attaining enterprise-wide cloud within the next three to five years, 17 percent of the respondents stated that they operated with a balanced blend of on-premises solutions. The remaining respondents either had some cloud technologies in place or none at all.
The journey to the cloud is like other major shifts in technology, as it occurs in stages as companies migrate to their future of work. Moving from one level of maturity to the next isn’t always easy or fast, but it’s progressive. According to the survey, the organizations rated favorably for cloud maturity had a few things in common. They were larger organizations that implemented centers of excellence and that used analytics to monitor and measure the performance of their cloud services to determine whether they should invest more or pull back. As more organizations implement cloud solutions, post-deployment strategies will become one of the determining factors to understand if they achieved their desired outcome. As an organization, you may want to asses where you are today and know what your needs are going. Cloud maturity is not typically a one-size-fits-all concept. Get smart about cloud! Know what your options are after the deployment by understanding best practices in the cloud community, researching marketing trends related to cloud, and seeking advice from the experts in the field.
