I’m sitting in a hospital room while my three-year-old son, Daniel, is in surgery. He’s receiving a liver transplant to help with a rare genetic condition he was born with. This surgery, and the transplanted liver from my wife, will save his life.

Caring for a son with intense medical needs has been no small feat. Over the years, we’ve seen firsthand the struggles that other transplant families experienced, and without support from Deloitte we feel like our situation could have been very different. My health insurance, available through Deloitte, helped Daniel to be treated at one of the top transplant centers in the United States. I was able to take family leave so I could take care of my family. Thanks to our annual well-being subsidy and the hybrid technology allowance available to me when I joined Deloitte, I was able to purchase home office equipment and be more present with my family as they recovered.

Now, a year later, Daniel’s health continues to improve each day. All in all, his recovery has been amazing and thanks to his transplant, he gets to experience being a healthy kid now. Daniel’s team granted me the title of honorary “transplant nurse” — as it has been an enormous lift to keep him healthy and thriving at home, but I am very dedicated to his care and feel like I continue to be his best advocate. The support I have felt from Deloitte has helped me feel like I am being the best “transplant nurse” to my son that I can be.

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Deloitte for supporting me in what I feel is my most important role, as a dad. I believe that Deloitte’s generous family leave and the overwhelming support from my colleagues was instrumental in helping our family get through a very challenging year.
