Monitor Institute's Mario Zapata Encinas on Urban Sustainability
Social impact is personal impact for a Deloitte professional working to improve cities
His role at Deloitte: Senior Consultant, Monitor Institute by Deloitte. A native of Spain, Mario joined Deloitte in 2019 as an analyst, and now works to advise public and private sector leaders on their social impact strategy efforts. He also works to support Deloitte’s purpose-driven strategy – a career evolution that he thinks perfectly fits his interests. “My degree is in public policy and I had done work in the field internationally and nonprofits in different countries,” he says. Mario learned about Deloitte when he was studying in college and applied through the campus recruiting program.
His purpose in action: Mario began working on Deloitte’s collaboration with the World Economic Forum, Salesforce, Citi, the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and more than 20 organizations on the launch of Yes San Francisco (Yes SF), Urban Sustainability Challenge in 2023. The challenge is a unique call to action for entrepreneurs to submit sustainable solutions that contribute to the needs of San Francisco through scalable improvements to urban spaces in its downtown area. For Impact Day 2024, Mario and his team worked to provide skills-based volunteering support from Deloitte professionals to sustainable startups looking to scale their impact in San Francisco. Similar to other startups, sustainable startups tend to need coaching on executive leadership, sustainability grants, programs, and tax incentives, and talent and business strategy – things, Mario says, that “Deloitte professionals are well positioned to help with.”
His impact: Mario’s work at Deloitte sits at the intersection of how he can make an impact personally and professionally. “I came to Deloitte to develop professionally in the business world, but my interests and the skills I developed have enabled me to shape my career towards helping organizations as they tackle complex problems,” he says. Yes SF is an example of Deloitte’s potential for impact as well, he says. “It can help us strengthen our alliances and relationships, deepen our connections in local communities, elevate our brand, engage and develop our talent,” he says. “It’s very exciting and it matters so much to me.”
