Google’s data center and cloud region impact in Thailand

Exploring the economic, social and environmental impact

How is Google helping to enable the digital future of Thailand? This study explores the economic, environmental, and social impact of Google's new data center and cloud region in Thailand. Deloitte's ongoing work with Google includes work focused on the economic, environmental and social impacts of Google's data centers.

Google in Thailand: Driving digital transformation

The 21st century digital economy has many benefits that are not always visible—from increased energy efficiency to cost savings for businesses to more equitable access to digital services. Google’s new data center and related cloud region in Thailand are helping to rapidly grow the digital economy, and with it, jobs and the broader economy. This together should mean businesses and the public sector can reach customers and constituents more effectively while also achieving productivity gains.

In 2018, Thailand developed its National Strategy (2018–2037)¹—the country’s goal for sustainable national development, which includes six substrategies. Google’s economic, environmental and social investments in Thailand look to impact a majority of these substrategies:

  • The direct, indirect and induced economic contributions that Google’s data center and cloud region can have on Thailand’s broader digital economy, infrastructure and job markets reflect Thailand’s National Strategy on National Competitiveness Enhancement—by helping to bolster growth engine industries including the digital, data and artificial intelligence (AI) industries.
  • Google’s development of a cloud region aims to deliver high-performance and low-latency services to large enterprises, startups and public sector organizations—all while helping to create a safer, more secure digital world in connection to Thailand’s National Security Policy and Plan and its goal for digital transformation by 2027.
  • Google has stated ambitious sustainability goals, such as by 2030 running on 24/7 carbon-free energy and replenishing 120% of the freshwater it consumes. These goals are consistent with Thailand’s Strategy on Eco-Friendly Development and Growth.
  • Google has been investing in the communities in where it operates—including through job readiness programs to help develop a skilled workforce or empowering small- and medium-sized businesses. Such efforts can contribute toward Thailand’s Human Capital Development and Strengthening and Social Cohesion and Just Society strategies.
