Strengthening the pipeline of educators

The Foundation sponsors a variety of national initiatives designed to develop and support PhD students pursuing an academic career.

Supporting future educators to help better prepare future talent

The Foundation has supported accounting PhD education for decades through its Doctoral Fellowship Program, the American Accounting Association/Deloitte Foundation/J. Michael Cook Doctoral Consortium, and other initiatives. It is also at the forefront with the AICPA Foundation, Big Four public accounting firms, and many other large CPA firms and state societies to help reverse the shortage of PhD accounting faculty in the United States by increasing the pipeline of quality doctoral candidates in accounting through the Accounting Doctoral Scholars Program.

American Accounting Association/Deloitte Foundation/J. Michael Cook Doctoral Consortium
The Consortium gives students who are about to complete their PhD programs the opportunity to engage with and learn from some of the country's most distinguished faculty and discuss important issues related to research, teaching, and career development. Accounting issues are examined from different research perspectives through formal presentations and panels, and social activities enable the students to interact with today's leading teachers and researchers and with their peers from other universities. Participants also hear about navigating the early years of an academic career, from the interview and placement process to time management, research, and publishing.

Accounting Doctoral Scholars
The Deloitte Foundation, in conjunction with the AICPA Foundation, dozens of the country’s largest accounting firms, and several state CPA societies, sponsors the Accounting Doctoral Scholars Program, which addresses the growing shortage of PhD professionals in auditing and tax. The program provides financial support to encourage professionals, with public accounting experience in auditing and tax and an interest in teaching, to transition into academic roles at the university level. Participants also receive guidance and tools as well as networking opportunities to help navigate the early years of an academic career. For further program information, contact www.adsphd.org.

Deloitte Foundation Doctoral Fellowship program
Since 1956, this program has provided financial support to outstanding doctoral students in accounting to help strengthen the quantity and quality of accounting professors who will teach the next generation of business leaders. Up to 10 recipients each year are awarded $25,000 each to help cover expenses during their final year of coursework and the first year of their dissertation. The program has supported more than 1,000 PhDs in completing their academic career journey, impacting the thousands of students they teach over time.
