When did you first become interested in STEM?

My passion for technology began back in college when I was studying marketing. I joined my university’s Advertising Team where I had the opportunity to work with people from different educational backgrounds such as Human-Computer Interaction and UI/UX design. We developed a national digital marketing and advertising campaign for a national brand and that led us to win first place in the AAF National Student Advertising Competition.

Consequently, I decided to pursue a degree in STEM when I was working in the digital advertising space in my previous workplace where I had the opportunity to work with predictive analytics tools to drive brand awareness, online engagement, and sales for my clients.

I think the interest was always there. The general curiosity of trying to find an explanation for everything just piqued my interest in STEM from a young age. Whether it was breaking apart remote control cars and trying to figure out how to reassemble them or trying to devise new cheat codes for video games, my interest in STEM was always present. The passion only grew and led me to get a bachelor’s in computer science. While in college, one of my friends completed a project on how technology impacts us daily and how we can use it to make our lives better. I was very intrigued and also began working on projects. For example, we created an interactive app that allows you to input the ingredients you have on hand in your kitchen and a recipe is generated.

What led you to Deloitte, and specifically, a tech role at Deloitte?

Melany

What led me to Deloitte was the career growth and support experiences shared by different Deloitte professionals during campus career fairs and networking events. Connecting with a variety of professionals and learning that Deloitte empowers its people to grow in many different areas within the organization through mentorship programs and more made me realize Deloitte was the perfect fit for me.

Deloitte has provided me with opportunities to give back to the community, such as when I packaged thousands of back-to-school supplies for donations with other colleagues as part of our Chicago office-wide Impact Day activity. In addition, I recently represented Deloitte in a networking event where we celebrated students that were given full-time or internship offers for 2023. I had the opportunity to answer questions, share our purpose as Deloitte professionals, and discuss career paths at Deloitte.

I believe Deloitte is a pioneer in technology and is constantly innovating by launching new, highly competitive technologies in the marketplace that drive growth. It feels so great to be exactly where I belong.

I always knew of Deloitte due to its reputation for being the leading professional services organization with a market-leading cyber practice. While in college, I was always exploring unique opportunities to be able to apply the skills I was learning, and that led me to a summer leadership experience at Deloitte exploring cyber risk. I was amazed by the leading technologies, frameworks, and ideas we were working on. During my internship, I got to see the breadth of our services across all spectrums first-hand and how technology and automation were playing a monumental role. I got so excited about the possibilities and wanted a front-row seat to all of these new developments, so I joined Deloitte full-time and have loved every moment.

How have you been able to make an impact as a tech professional at Deloitte?

Melany

As a young professional in technology at Deloitte, I have been able to make an impact by using my project management, problem-solving, and analytical skills at onboarding thousands of our client engagements onto our custom-built software technology that streamlines tax engagement processes and provides engagement transparency to our clients.

In addition, as an IT professional this early in my career, I have been given the opportunity to lead tasks that impact the success of the Tax Transformation practice’s projects, such as gathering requirements and executing business processes for new market offerings to onboard into our system, leading onboarding presentations to Deloitte leaders, and providing guidance to new hires and interns to help them be successful in their professional careers at Deloitte.

When we work with our clients, helping them solve some of their biggest challenges that they face today, it really allows me to see how we make a difference. We use innovative solutions, cutting-edge technological advances, and great teams to assist our clients and our communities, and that really makes me proud and humbled to be working at Deloitte. Many of my projects at Deloitte have made me realize how much our work directly impacts people’s lives.
