Generators of hope | Support for Ukraine

For a year Deloitte Foundation has been supporting Ukraine

Deloitte Poland Foundation | February 2023

When incorporating Deloitte Foundation, we did not assume providing any humanitarian aid, focusing on education, climate, and charity. The life has written a different scenario, though. The support for Ukraine has become an equally important aspect of our operation.

For a year, our Eastern neighbours have been suffering from the war. According to ZMINA, a Ukrainian NGO referring to data collected by the Ukrainian Police, since the beginning of the Russian invasion, 16,502 civilians have been killed. According to the Polish Border Guard, over last year, 9,603 refugees, mostly women with children, have crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border. Another group of 8 million has moved to Western Ukraine looking for safety.

Many personal tragedies, or stories that no one would wish to repeat, are hidden behind these numbers. We could not remain idle faced by such calamity. When incorporating Deloitte Foundation, we did not assume providing any humanitarian aid, focusing on education, climate and charity. The life has written a different scenario, though. The support for Ukraine has become an equally important aspect of our operation.

Taking care of one another

We began with assisting the employees of Deloitte Ukraine and their families. We helped nearly 430 people move to Poland and to other Central European states, providing assistance with transport, temporary and target accommodation. Our support included psychological financial and legal assistance. All employees of Deloitte Ukraine who decided to leave their country were offered employment in the countries to which they moved. Today they are members of our teams.

Since the first day of the war, our employees have followed many grassroots initiatives to help the refugees. Nearly 500 people contributed to over 50 local projects providing the refugees with basic necessities, such as food, clothes, transport means, accommodation, organising Polish language courses and helping them to find jobs. To make the process easier, we have opened a special Microsoft Teams group that allowed better coordination of activities and improved their overall efficiency. Using it, our employees could promptly respond to the needs and requests, also those of our Ukrainian colleagues. The spectacular support campaign integrated Deloitte people not only in Poland, but in the entire Central Europe.

Lead the way

At the same time, we cooperated with NGOs specialised in humanitarian aid.

In total, we collaborated with 19 NGOs organising humanitarian aid for nearly 10,000 victims of the war.

From the outbreak of the Russian aggression, we have supported the Ukrainian Home, an initiative organised by “Nasz Wybór” Foundation and providing support to war refugees. In cooperation with Zarys Foundation, we purchased a truckload of medicines for Ukrainian hospitals and fifty fully equipped medical backpacks for frontline paramedics. Since September 2022, we have delivered 1,000 food packages monthly to civilians in the most exposed regions of Ukraine (such as Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Donetsk and Odesa) We plan to send the total of 9,000 such packages by May 2023

In cooperation with the city of Rzeszów, we have provided local authorities in Ukraine faced with power outage with 50 electric power generators.

These are our generators of hope. We hope them to shine the light and raise the spirit of our neighbours.

Foster inclusion

Owing to support provided by Deloitte offices all over the world, we have succeeded to collect funds we now use to provide ongoing aid and finance long-term projects aimed at the effect of scale.

In cooperation with Copernicus Science Centre we have initiated a cross-cultural integration programme for Ukrainian kids and families living in Polish communities, focusing on the development of STEAM competencies. In liaison with the Ukrainian Association for Innovation and Digital Education, we are preparing a Polish learning platform for Ukrainians. It will be available for everyone, free of charge.

Broad access to education is of crucial importance now, as you cannot regain the years that have been lost. Young people who attend schools in Poland and in Europe will become the generation that will reconstruct and modernise Ukraine. To this end, they need knowledge, tools and competencies we have and want to share

Collaborate for measurable impact

The assistance provided by Deloitte is not limited to the activities of the Foundation; it includes enormous support of our business teams. A few days after the outbreak of the war, Deloitte announced its withdrawal from Russia and Belarus. Our technical team developed Irene, a chatbot that helped NGOs in reaching the refugees. We cooperate with Polish and Ukrainian ministries developing solutions to be applied once the war is over. We want our assistance to bring measurable effects and make it easier for Ukrainians to reconstruct their country.
