Deloitte Consulting and the Deloitte Health Equity Institute supported March of Dimes with development of a maternity care deserts interactive map, powered by HealthPrism™ data and insights.
March of Dimes (MoD) leads and supports research, advocacy, and education on issues regarding maternal and infant care, including access to care. Maternity care deserts (MCD) are counties in which access to maternity health care services is limited or absent, either through lack of services or barriers to a person’s ability to access that care. More than 2.2 million women of childbearing age live in maternity care deserts in the United States (1,095 counties) that have no hospital offering obstetric care, no birth center, and no obstetric provider.
A note on gaps in health equity data
Data on factors critical to understanding health equity, including but not limited to race and ethnicity, are not reported in many data sets in the United States. To enable meaningful insights into health equity, Deloitte uses advanced modeling to fill in gaps on race and ethnicity in its own data sources. Learn more
