The Deloitte Health Equity Institute

Advancing health equity by translating our purpose into action

The Deloitte Health Equity Institute was established to share our most impactful learnings, extend the efforts of others, and meaningfully contribute to broader health equity issues.

Our purpose

Health equity is more than equitable access to care. We define health equity as the ability to fulfill our human potential in all aspects of health and well-being. Achieving health equity requires leaders to intentionally and deliberately design and build systems that advance health equity as an outcome. To succeed will requires us to address disparate circumstances in drivers of health, also known as social determinants of health, as well as the disproportionate affects they have on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), highlighted most recently by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deloitte has established the Deloitte Health Equity Institute to build upon a decade of impact made by the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions. The Institute is grounded in our declaration of racism as a public health crisis and, as such, is dedicated to convening and amplifying crisis response through three initial commitments, with more to come in the days ahead.

Our commitment to addressing health equity

As the challenges of COVID-19 continued to highlight significant health disparities, Deloitte mobilized to drive progress with cross-sector partners. We also recognized the need to do more in order to make meaningful impact over the longer term, in alignment with our overall efforts. With this realization, the Deloitte Health Equity Institute was established, along with three areas of focus.

 

Activating health equity

Our work to date has underscored a far greater opportunity to activate broader initiatives, including:

  • Responding to historic inequity and current acute crises with financial support of nonprofit organizations working to address immediate COVID-19–related disparities in equitable health outcomes
  • Investing in community-based nonprofits addressing a broad set of systemic barriers, ideally led by people of color
  • Strengthening public health resilience by fostering change through research and convening ecosystems

Dr. Kulleni Gebreyes, director of the Deloitte Health Equity Institute

Dr. Kulleni Gebreyes has over 20 years of health care experience across the commercial and public sector. She holds an MD from Harvard Medical School and an MBA from Johns Hopkins. Dr. Gebreyes has developed and implemented strategies for population health management and value-based care, physician alignment and patient activation, diversity, equity and inclusion, and the drivers of health. She is an active advocate for vulnerable and underserved communities.
