Machine data revolution: Feeding the machine

With machine learning poised to overhaul operations and decision-making, artificial intelligence (AI) pioneers are realizing that legacy data models and infrastructure—designed to support humans not machines—is a roadblock to machine learning (ML) success. In response, organizations are disrupting the data management value chain. They’re deploying new technologies including advanced data capture, analytics to identify connections among random data, and cloud-based data stores to support complex modeling. All of this can help organizations turn growing volumes of data into a foundation for when machines will make real-time and at-scale decisions that humans cannot.

Core revival

Modernizing legacy systems and migrating them to the cloud may help unleash an organization’s digital potential—if it doesn’t bust the transformation budget. But cost-prohibitive cloud migrations and core modernizations may soon be a thing of the past. Clever outsourcing arrangements are reengineering business cases for core modernization. Core assets are shifting to increasingly powerful platforms. And platform-first strategies are addressing technical debt in ERP systems. These innovative approaches for extracting value from legacy core assets may soon become standard components of every CIO’s digital transformation playbook.

Bespoke for billions: Digital meets physical

Will 2020 be looked upon as the turning point when we adapted to digital interactions to conduct our everyday lives? Perhaps—the prevalence of a digital life has us pining for in-person interactions. However, will consumers be satisfied with distinct physical and digital brand experiences? We think they’ll expect a blend of the best of both, with in-person and digital experiences seamlessly intertwined. And, tailored to fit the individual customer’s behaviors, attitudes, and preferences.

Zero trust: Never trust, always verify

Cyberattacks have undermined the traditional castle-and-moat approach to cybersecurity. “Zero trust” says that the modern enterprise necessitates something different than a defined perimeter inside which every user, workload, device, and network is inherently trusted. Instead, in zero trust, all access is validated based on all available data points. Data, applications, workloads, and other resources are treated as individual, manageable units to contain breaches, and access is provided based on the principle of least privilege. But the move to zero trust could require significant planning, including addressing foundational cybersecurity issues and automating manual processes.

Machine learning for the health of the human machine: MLOps

Many ML models are hamstrung by clunky development and deployments that stifle experimentation and hinder collaboration. But a strong dose of operational discipline can help organizations efficiently scale AI to enable business transformation. To realize the broader benefits of AI and ML, the era of artisanal AI should give way to one of automated, industrialized insights. Enter MLOps, also known as ML CI/CD, ModelOps, and ML DevOps: the application of DevOps to model development and delivery to industrialize and scale machine learning, from development and deployment to ongoing model maintenance and management.

Rebooting the digital workplace

As the world’s largest unplanned work-from-home experiment continues, many business leaders are asking: Is a permanently remote workforce sustainable? Will innovation suffer in the absence of face-to-face peer connections? What if companies overcame the digital workplace’s deficits by embracing its positive aspects? As onsite workspaces evolve, organizations can use the data to create thriving and productive offices, seamlessly interwoven with the remote experience.
