Life at Deloitte

Career Journey: Ray’Shawn Elliott

A modern day pioneer

Ray’Shawn Elliott was the first in her family to graduate from college. She entered the corporate world, even when all signs pointed to a government job. She balances being a mom and a professional.

I had a degree in accounting, and I was prepared to spend my entire career working for the federal government. But the opportunity to take a chance came up, and I stepped out with both feet. I can’t imagine being anywhere other than Deloitte today.

— Ray’Shawn Elliott, senior manager, Risk and Financial Advisory, Deloitte & Touche LLP

Government adjacent, you could say

As a senior manager in Deloitte Risk and Financial Advisory, Ray’Shawn has served many clients in the government & public services space. It’s a world she’s seen from early on in life, growing up in Maryland (with Washington D.C. just a stone’s throw from her) and holding down a full time government job, during her last three years of college, she figured she would find her spot with an agency and continue along that path. But that changed when she received a call from a recruiter and learned of the variety of roles, fast pace of work, and challenging and supportive culture she could enjoy at Deloitte. Joining the organization didn’t even involve abandoning her roots; today she tells friends that she helps the federal government understand how to leverage investments, understand risks, and make the most of the programs and services that taxpayers fund. She’s passionate about that mission.

Talent scout

Technically, Ray’Shawn’s work centers on helping her clients with financial management concerns, internal controls, and compliance programs. She’s also charged with cultivating client relationships and developing new business, which fits well with her skill set. But now that she’s more than a decade in, her primary (and favorite) activity is building high-performing teams to do great work. In fact, she loves anything that involves grooming and growing talent: mentoring, identifying strengths, and positioning people to succeed. She credits much of her own success to the people who came alongside her as she navigated her own way, and she relishes the chance to do that for someone else.

Planting new roots

She may have taken the leap to Deloitte on something of a chance, but today Ray’Shawn is a devotee to the culture and the people. Those, plus the depth and breadth of the services that Deloitte offers and how they translate into a great opportunity for her own growth. She doesn’t know what kind of challenge she’ll take on next, but she’s quite sure she won’t back down from it.
