NEW YORK, April 21, 2014 –  Deloitte today announced its collaboration with Virginia Tech to help launch the Pamplin College Center for Business Intelligence and Analytics.

"We are very excited to be collaborating with Deloitte to help bring Virginia Tech to the forefront of the field of business intelligence and analytics,” said Patrick Fan, director of the center and accounting and information systems professor. “An understanding of the principles behind big data and analytics is a required skill in today’s workplace as more organizations are leveraging analytics to better understand their customers and uncover new insights in existing data.”

The Pamplin College Center for Business Intelligence and Analytics has four immediate goals:

  • To develop an interdepartmental minor in business intelligence and analytics that would be available to all Pamplin students and enhance the offerings in analytics to master’s and Ph.D. students;
  • To provide financial and data resources to Pamplin faculty pursuing research in areas related to business analytics;
  • To build cooperative research relationships with groups, including other academic units on campus, engaged in big data research; and
  • To work with business, nonprofit, and government organizations to develop service learning, case competitions, certification programs, and other experiential opportunities for business students in areas related to business analytics.

The Center’s long-term objectives are to expand Pamplin faculty participation in sponsored research related to business intelligence and analytics, particularly by interdisciplinary project teams and to establish an industry advisory board that can lead to enhanced financial support for the Center, internships and employment opportunities for students, and research sponsorships for faculty.

“We already have a deep relationship with Virginia Tech and are excited to grow that relationship through our support of the Pamplin College for Business Intelligence and Analytics Center,” said Nick Gonnella, partner, Deloitte Tax LLP. “We look forward to this collaboration with the University as it gives students a better understanding of analytics in preparation for a promising career when they graduate and fosters an environment for exciting research.”
