Retail and transaction banking
In this episode of Branching Out, our retail banking podcast, hosts Kristin Korzekwa and Bill Dworsky are joined by Greg Murray, Head of Transaction Banking Product Management, Santander Bank, N.A., to discuss emerging challenges in the world of transaction banking.
Murray dives into the topic of ISO 20022 and the implications it holds for payments—including speed enhancement, transparency of cross-border payments, and the overall likelihood that there will be an adoption of ISO globally. Plus, see what sorts of other incoming changes are likely to impact customers and communities alike.
It is a global initiative. So, it's not unique to the U.S. There are a number of countries and banks within those countries that have already adopted the ISO standard. If I recall correctly, globally, I think about 19 or 20% of banks according to SWIFT, are now ISO-ready. In the U.S., that number is about 26% It's been a long road, but we're in a much better place now. And ultimately, within the next year and a year and a half, we should see a significant amount of adoption globally.

We work with PagoNxt as needed to serve the needs of the U.S., and one of those needs was the opportunity to provide our clients with the ability to track payments end-to-end. We were able to work with PagoNxt to leverage their access to [SWIFT’s gpi] service and extend it to our clients. So, there's more on the roadmap that PagoNxt can help us achieve, but that would be one quick example of something that we were able to bring to market using or leveraging the capabilities that PagoNxt brings to the table.
