From miles to mindfulness

If you’d asked Recruiting Manager Melissa Sweeney what well-being meant when she first joined Deloitte, she’d have said it meant tracking your steps. As a dedicated runner, she knew about putting in the miles. Eight years later, you’re just as likely to find Melissa leading a meditation and mindfulness session as running a footrace. Through Deloitte programs she’s discovered that well-being goes beyond the physical side of things.

As what’s known as a ”Well-being Wizard” for Deloitte, Melissa is trained on well-being resources and then shares those resources with others, a role she says she relishes. “How cool is it that I get to live out my passion to recruit top talent and then lead a meditation session in a single day?” she enthuses.

Melissa made her move to Deloitte’s recruitment team after working as a producer and on-air talent for a TV show that helped college students and young professionals break into careers. Her ability to connect with people and relate to their stories made her a natural in her first role at Deloitte as a campus recruiter.

It was during her third year in the role that Melissa witnessed firsthand Deloitte’s commitment to holistic well-being. When her mother had a heart attack, Melissa was blindsided. Despite it being the busiest month of the year for MBA recruiting, she was encouraged to take all the time she needed to be with her mother. She still gets choked up recalling the unwavering support she received.

Later, when she enjoyed a combination of Paid Family Leave and short-term disability after the birth of her son, Duke, Melissa felt the same wholehearted backing of her team. And she didn’t even break stride when she returned to work, earning a promotion to manager, proving that she could thrive as both a parent and a professional.

And speaking of stride, Melissa hasn’t hung up her running shoes. With the help of Deloitte’s Well-being Subsidy, she seeks balance in her activities. She uses the subsidy to buy running shoes, cover 5K registrations and maintain her monthly yoga membership. These pursuits provide Melissa with precious time for reflecting, generating ideas and reconnecting with herself, so she can flourish at home and at work.
