Embracing change and empowering mental health
As a senior solution specialist in Deloitte’s Human Capital Organization Transformation business, Vee helps clients learn new things and adapt to change, whether the change stems from new technologies or from diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
Vee has led colleagues through transformative change too, by organizing a book club featuring “So You Want to Talk About Race” by Ijeoma Oluo that provided a space to ignite reflection, build awareness and activate allyship. Each day, Vee continues to discover their impact at Deloitte in new ways. This includes developing an onboarding program for new hires that encourages inclusive behaviors in the Human Capital OT practice, and curating events that promote the well-being of colleagues and highlight the nuances of those who are part of systemically disadvantaged communities. During Black History Month, for instance, Vee organized a heart-healthy workout session led by a small, Black-owned business, that shed light on important health issues faced by the Black community.
Change isn’t just Vee’s professional forte—it’s also something they’ve gone through on a personal level. In their first year at Deloitte, Vee experienced a psychological issue requiring support. Vee felt comfortable enough with the leaders of their team to share their situation, knowing that Deloitte takes a psychologically informed approach to caring for its people. “I knew I would be met with compassion. All they wanted to know was what I needed and how to best support me,” Vee says. After a medical leave of absence, Vee describes being welcomed back and brought up to speed on everything the team was working on. Vee credits the support and resources provided by Deloitte, along with colleagues’ empathetic responses for empowering them to own their narrative and embark on a powerful restart.
Having embraced a newfound life-work harmony, Vee now begins each day by greeting the sun with their dog. Workshops through Deloitte’s well-being program have been instrumental in helping Vee develop this morning ritual, set boundaries and manage emotions, which has helped them thrive both personally and professionally.
And thanks to the Well-being Subsidy, they’ve found levity and joy even through the toughest times. Vee uses the subsidy to pursue activities they couldn’t afford growing up: Guitar lessons, archery, taekwondo, dancing and craft projects—all a celebration of their authentic self. Vee says the activity that’s really stuck has been the guitar. They laugh, “I’m a big Prince fan, so I’m working my way up to Purple Rain.”
