How national security goes international
Robert Carton never thought he’d translate his experience in the Navy to a civilian job, much less one at Deloitte. He wasn’t sure if the pace and intensity of "corporate life" would be enough for him. Now he admits his misjudgment, having joined a team of highly skilled and motivated colleagues just as determined to protect people from threats.
I spent the bulk of my Naval career working at the National Security Agency, running offensive cyber operations. Now I do the same for businesses around the world; it’s like Deloitte has its own Red Team capabilities.

Connected and vulnerable
Leaning on his years of national security work, Robert focuses on connected device security for Deloitte’s clients. And he knows the stakes are high. Connected devices are found in everything from our cars and homes to MRI machines—and they come with risks that they were never designed to handle. Those risks include the potential of leaking sensitive data and more.
Beating the hackers at their own games
Robert is especially proud of his work in the automobile industry, testing prototype vehicles. He and his team start with investigative work, building “attack chains” for the cars’ connected systems. The goal is to try to remotely manipulate the systems operating the car, including the autonomous driving capability. Any vulnerabilities he and his team find help their clients improve vehicle technology and safety.
A (healthy) fear of ruts
Two other remnants from Robert’s military experience have also found their match at Deloitte. One is his desire to do work that’s challenging and impactful. He loves knowing that he has to search hard, meet the challenge, to help make cars and other common products safer. Second is his preference for work that doesn’t follow the work-a-day schedule. He stays on the move, and constantly translates work from one industry to another, while continuing to learn at every step. It turns out that this job has more in common with Special Warfare work than he ever imagined.
