From networking to meaningful connections
Clarencia and Jessica share how they build meaningful relationships in the workplace
January 22, 2024
Clarencia Taylor, Audit & Assurance senior manager, Deloitte & Touche LLP, and Jessica Camilo, HBCU campus recruiting specialist, Risk & Financial Advisory, Deloitte Services LP, share their insights on how to build meaningful relationships at work. They shared their story in this video, along with their top three tips below.
Jessica’s tips for connecting with colleagues:
1. Be welcoming
Making someone feel welcome can help create a solid foundation for a strong friendship to develop both inside and outside of work. A smile goes a long way, especially if you are meeting someone new. I believe that when sending any form of communication to your colleagues to start off joyful, rather than straight to the point, to help encourage a sense of belonging.
2. Engage, engage, engage!
Invite a colleague to lunch, do a check-in around their well-being, or ask about their career plans and how you can help them reach their goals. Friendships are to be watered if you want them to grow fruitfully.
3. Create a safe space for honest feedback
Friendships are built on compassion, vision, and integrity. We should strive to exhibit these traits to build one another up through constructive feedback. You can build meaningful relationships at work when you provide honest feedback with next steps on how to progress forward. Be okay with receiving feedback as well, knowing it’s a vehicle for growth and guidance.
Clarencia’s tips for connecting with colleagues:
1. Be authentic
Being authentic allows you the opportunity to build deeper and more rewarding relationships at work. It provides a sense of belonging as you are genuinely being yourself in those relationships. If you are willing to allow another person to see the real you, then your relationship can reach another level.
2. Put in the time and the effort
To build a genuine friendship at work you have to put in the time and the effort. Be intentional about connecting with colleagues outside of projects and assignments to see how they are doing and show you genuinely care.
3. Exhibit empathy
Ask people questions to learn more about them and their lives and imagine yourself in their shoes. A friendship is much more likely to begin when the person feels they can trust you with their feelings, feel comfortable around you, and feel understood by you.
