Well-being tips

Deloitte professionals share ways to maintain healthy well-being in an evolving landscape

March 13, 2025

We asked six of our professionals to share some of their well-being tips. Check out what they had to say.

Given the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the consulting industry, how have you adapted your well-being routine(s) to cope with changes in work locations, technology, client expectations, or industry trends?

Mary Kate Shea, senior consultant, Deloitte Transactions and Business Analytics LLP:

Due to the dynamic nature of our job, it is difficult to have a routine in general. However, there are certain things that I keep fairly consistent on a daily and weekly basis, such as rising and bedtime, working out in the morning, my diet, weekly gymnastics, and orchestra.

Shannon Pierce, manager, Deloitte Transactions and Business Analytics LLP:

I set boundaries with my team, clients, and leaders on my work schedule. I avoid emails and calls outside of normal hours and put away my work phone on weekends to fully disconnect. If work or travel ever becomes taxing at times, I make sure to relay my concerns to team leaders so we can find a solution together.

During your career, how have you managed to disconnect as a form of self-care?

Ellen Gray, senior consultant, Deloitte Transactions and Business Analytics LLP:

I have found that spending time outdoors every day is really helpful in my day-to-day energy—taking a walk with my dogs during lunch rejuvenates me for the rest of the day. I also like to pre-schedule PTO days with nothing planned. It is nice to have a day every once in a while to catch up on small life tasks or just relax and totally disconnect, even if it is just in my own home.

Monique Paulis, senior consultant, Deloitte Transactions and Business Analytics LLP:

I disconnect by silencing my work phone or leaving it behind. This helps me disconnect and focus on other aspects of my life. Working out also clears my mind and helps my body cope with stress. When I’m having a particularly difficult day, I head to the community pool at lunch. The clear blue, calm water surrounded by palm trees gives me an instant boost and helps clear my mind. A quick dip in the cool water also reinvigorates both my mind and body, allowing me to return to work feeling refreshed.

As you have advanced in your career, how do you integrate self-care practices into your role and responsibilities?

Angelique Paulis, senior consultant, Deloitte Transactions and Business Analytics LLP

I try to take a “treat others how you would want to be treated” approach. I try to avoid scheduling meetings during inconsiderate times, such as very early mornings, during lunch, and after typical work hours. This can sometimes be challenging with our people and clients located all over the world, but I feel it is worth the effort.

I also try to be available for team members to talk to when they need it. Being willing to listen to and support my team when they need it is something I try to commit to.

How do you foster/encourage well-being on your teams?

Heather Sprowls, senior manager, Deloitte Transactions and Business Analytics LLP

I encourage my team members to take PTO and ensure they feel comfortable doing so. When a team member has planned PTO, I ask them to inform their teammates and plan for a backup so they can truly unplug. I also strive to be compassionate when things don’t go as planned or caretaking responsibilities pop up. When a team member is unwell, I encourage them to take the time they need to feel better—and I also recognize that team members may be caretakers for others, not just children.

Some additional helpful tips:

  • Remember the importance of advocating for yourself. From setting boundaries to supporting your broader team, it's all about balance and empowerment.
  • Consistent routines with activities like working out, journaling, and maintaining a healthy diet can help manage stress and fatigue.
  • Prioritizing realistic deadlines with attainable due dates can help team members manage their workloads.
  • During challenging times, discussing the situation with a trusted colleague can be beneficial, allowing you to reapproach the situation with a renewed perspective.
