AI regulations - Finding the balance
November session
Presented by the Deloitte AI Institute

Around the world, governments are developing and establishing laws and regulations to govern how organizations use AI. Some business leaders may be inclined to take a “wait and see” approach to regulations before establishing an AI governance structure that keeps their AI programs compliant. However, industry is already at a point where AI and its capabilities continually outpace effective rulemaking, and waiting for government mandates may not be the most prudent approach. What’s the solution to this puzzle? How does an organization find a balance between adhering to existing rules as they are released, and investing in self-regulation?

This event, presented by the Deloitte AI Institute as a part of the Leading Conversations in AI series, will feature moderator Beena Ammanath, Executive Director of the Global Deloitte AI Institute. She will be joined by panelists Debjani Ghosh, President of NASSCOM, and Kay Firth-Butterfield, Head of AI & Machine Learning and Member of the Executive Committee of the World Economic Forum.

Panelists:
Debjani Ghosh
Kay Firth-Butterfield

AI strategy: designing and implementing AI solutions that really work
February session
Presented by the Deloitte AI Institute

Machine learning algorithms, AI-powered platforms, and analytics-enabled solutions are already becoming mainstream. Combine that with immense computing power to process oceans of data drawn from billions of connected devices, and we are growing the ability to solve complex problems at speeds that human brains alone can never achieve. But what are the keys to designing and implementing tools that are truly effective? What types of problems are businesses trying to solve, and is AI always the right answer? Join us to hear from three of Deloitte’s leading AI practitioners across business functions as they share their insight and experience guiding clients into the Age of With. We’ll discuss the latest trends in AI, the barriers businesses are facing today as they begin to engage with AI, and what it takes to be a leader in the AI space.

From imaging and linguistics to CAD and NLP
November session
Presented by the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad and Deloitte AI Institute

The engagement between academic research and industry has historically contributed to some of the greatest advances in artificial intelligence, transforming the way industries operate and demonstrating the value of collaboration. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have gained substantive momentum in the ways we learn and innovate, and has changed the role universities play in fulfilling demand for data scientists and innovative scientific research. Learn about the latest AI innovations and trends in image processing and natural language processing using deep learning technologies, exemplified through industry applications. How are AI technologies are being applied in industries, specifically linguistics and healthcare, today? How have effective academic-industrial partnerships benefited technological innovation and society, and how can this collaboration help drive the direction AI talent is headed? Our moderator Sanghamitra Pati, Deloitte India’s AI practice leader, will be joined by panelists and esteemed professors from the International Institute of Information Technology in Hyderabad, India: Professor Dipti Misra Sharma, who specializes in machine translation and linguistics, and Professor Jayanthi Sivaswamy, who specializes in image processing and medical image analysis for this fascinating conversation.

Panelists:
Professor Dipti Misra Sharma
Professor Jayanthi Sivaswamy

Moderator: Sanghamitra Pati

STEM: AI and analytics in the HBCU community
    June session
Presented by the historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) and the Deloitte AI Institute

The group that is responsible for creating AI technology is homogenous which is causing a “diversity disaster,” resulting in flawed AI systems that perpetuate gender and racial biases. The people who first notice biases are the users from the specific minority community that the algorithm is ignoring or targeting; therefore, maintaining a diverse AI team can help mitigate unwanted AI biases. Industry and academia are taking steps to increase diversity in AI, however, there is still a dearth of industry ready talent.

    Panelists:
Dr. Melissa C. McCoy (Tougaloo College)
Dr. Lesia L. Crumpton-Young (Morgan University)
    Dr. Janett Walters-Williams (Hampton University)

Future of AI: From academia to industry
    May session
Presented by Northeastern University and the Deloitte AI Institute

AI is disrupting every industry, and rightly so. As technologies become more complex and sophisticated, industry will require a lift from academic researchers with thorough experience and training at the forefront of data science and ML. A broad range of disciplines, including computer vision, network science, affective computing, stochastic optimization, and human-computer interactions, purports to design and develop intelligent systems that can automate tasks that are otherwise only within the scope of human intelligence.

What are the key developments, research outcomes, and thought processes in each of these disciplines? What are some real-time problems that this research can help tackle? What are the gaps between industry and academic perspectives, and how do we bridge them? What does the current state look like, and what does the future hold?

    Panelists:
    Tina Eliassi-Rad, PhD
    Kayse Lee Maass, PhD
    Natasha Noy, PhD
    Sarah Ostadabbas, PhD

    Moderator: Sherry Comes

    Emcee: Kim Holloway, PhD
