Bina Patel

Bina Patel is a managing director in the Private Wealth group of Deloitte Tax LLP’s Costa Mesa office. Bina is also the individual Income Tax National Competency leader for the Deloitte Tax USA practice and consults nationally on matters related to individual income taxation, including technical matters related to Section 199A, AMT, passive actively planning, multi-state tax planning, charitable planning, generational succession, divorce issues, California-specific trust taxation, QSBS holdings, and individual/trust business net operating losses. She primarily focuses on high net worth individuals, their closely-held investment entities, and their respective family offices. In addition to serving clients in these roles, Bina leads the Private Aircraft consulting practice for the US Deloitte Tax practice, and she has specialized expertise in such industries as private equity fund structures, trust companies, winery operations, numismatic accountings, and film production companies.

Prior to joining the Deloitte US Firms in 1999, Bina worked in the Auckland office of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu in both the accounting and tax functions, as well as an international transfer to the Edmonton, Canada office of Deloitte & Touche serving in their audit function. Bina has also completed short term rotations (three–six months) in the New York offices of Deloitte (working on Private Equity Fund clients) and Detroit/Chicago/New Jersey areas (national solutions group).

For more than 23 years with Deloitte, Bina has been advising wealthy individuals and their family offices in all tax and accounting matters. Her clients have included large multi-generation families, entrepreneurs, executives, and complex trusts and estates. She currently co-leads the Family Office Forum for the Southern California area and serves as a Board member of Chapman University’s philanthropic planning advisory committee.

Bina is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in California as well as a licensed Chartered Accountant in New Zealand. She is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, California Society of CPAs, Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand and Association of Chartered Accountants in the US. Bina holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Auckland (NZ).
