Dwayne Van Wieren
Partner | Severance Tax Leader
Dwayne has led Deloitte Tax LLP’s development of the severance tax advisory practice starting in 2014. He has extensive experience in the energy industry, having spent most of his career in Houston serving oil and gas companies. He is also a former sales and use tax auditor with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
Dwayne’s severance tax experience includes assisting clients with oil and gas severance tax audits, extensive work in identifying additional marketing cost deductions and assisting with filing refunds claims and calculating marketing cost deductions rate per Mcf calculations including yearly true-ups that clients use for severance tax compliance. He also helps clients identify and apply for additional well incentives.
Dwayne advises clients on transaction tax issues, including large transaction tax refunds and has provided audit defense services to numerous clients that have significantly reduced audit assessments. He has helped clients with managed audits and has advised on audit defense strategies for these transactions. He also has extensive experience evaluating transaction tax compliance functions for multistate clients and recommending design improvements to enhance overall compliance.
He has more than 25 years of experience in state and local tax. Before joining Deloitte, he was partner-in-charge of state and local tax services for the Southwest region and the national Transaction Tax Systems practice leader for another Big Four firm. Dwayne frequently speaks on sales and transaction tax-related issues at seminars throughout the country including COST, TEI, IPT, and the Paul J. Hartman State and Local Tax Forum.
He has a BS in finance from the University of Houston. He is a CPA in Texas and California and a member of the Texas Society of CPAs and the Tax Division of the AICPA.
