A far-reaching impact

As the president of the Business and Information Technology Society at his university, Kunmi Akingbade had an opportunity to establish relationships with leaders from the Deloitte recruiting team which provided visibility into the kind of work Deloitte does within the field of cyber security. Exposure to this information and the relationships he built with the team would influence Kunmi to pursue an internship opportunity that paved the way to a long-term career at Deloitte.

Twelve years in and Kunmi is now a senior manager working in Deloitte’s cyber risk services practice where he leads a team that works with tech leaders to help establish policy, develop compliance solutions, and assess risk for federal agencies as they work to mature their cyber security programs. It’s a rapidly growing industry, one that Kunmi finds to be rewarding. “It’s good to be part of what’s changing dynamically.”

Providing the experience and knowledge that leads to modernized, compliant, and secure technology solutions that increase efficiency on behalf of the client is what drives Kunmi to ensure that he’s constantly keeping up with federal policy changes and the constantly evolving industry standards to deliver best in class solutions.

It is because of the genuine support Kunmi received from his leadership team and mentors that he continues to sharpen his skills by completing certifications programs, further contributing to his knowledge of cyber security practices. “I’ve been able to acquire three different cyber security certifications. The certified information systems security professional certification, the certified information systems auditor certification, and the certified information privacy professional certification,” Kunmi shares.

In addition to his day-to-day work, Kunmi finds added fulfillment in supporting Deloitte’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives. He’s a member of the Black Employee Network in his local office and also made contributions to the IDEA Committee, short for Inclusion at Deloitte Executive Action Committee. IDEA includes professionals from different parts of the business, levels, and locations who all have a passion for advancing DEI throughout the organization. Participation in IDEA gave Kunmi and his peers an opportunity to provide input and feedback to leadership that would lead to the development of Deloitte’s inclusion vision statement, a meaningful experience Kunmi reflects on fondly.

“It was a twenty-word statement that took many hours to come up with,” he shares. “But, it was a very fun exercise and it’s probably one of my most memorable DEI efforts. I felt honored to be a part of that team.”

Kunmi’s experience navigating Deloitte from intern to senior manager is something he’s extremely proud of. As he’s grown with Deloitte, Kunmi continues to make an impact through his client work, collaborating with his colleagues, and participating initiatives to foster a more inclusive organization.
