Pioneer intern series: Rafael Huerta

Rafael Huerta has spent three summers as an intern at Deloitte, starting as a Pioneer Intern after his freshman year at college, then transitioning to Deloitte’s Discovery Internship, and finally completing a Tax Internship. This coming summer he will transition to a full-time role in Deloitte’s Business Tax Services practice. He reveals his favorite memories as an intern, advice for future interns, and why he decided to begin his professional career at Deloitte.

Describe your path since your internships to where you are now.
 

My time with Deloitte since 2016, has been rewarding. Each internship was geared toward my experience level. Deloitte has exposed me to many elements of business including meetings, systems, clients, and professionals from all levels. Throughout my internships, I was able to work in recruiting, audit & assurance, and tax. I ultimately chose to pursue a full-time career in tax because it was the most fitting for me. I can’t emphasize enough how these internships have helped me to develop professionalism and a strong network.

How did you feel when you received a full-time offer from Deloitte Tax LLP?

I felt very accomplished, especially because my family was extremely proud.

What is your favorite memory from your Deloitte internships?

My favorite memory from Deloitte was when I traveled to Boston during my Pioneer Internship. This was my first experience traveling to the east coast. Meeting new professionals and meeting the top freshman from around the country motivated me to keep working on my professional development and made me want more.

What is the moment you realized you love what you do at Deloitte?

I realized that I loved Deloitte when I received my first paycheck during the Pioneer Internship. Getting paid to do what you enjoy is very fulfilling. Beyond the monetary part though, I was proud to be part of such a big and well-known organization.
 

What advice would you give to future interns?

Interns should speak about what they are interested in trying or learning more about. Deloitte has endless opportunities and connections. Your career here can be built into the career of your dreams. The more interns communicate, the more Deloitte understands what their interns are looking for in their internship experience and help make it the best experience they can.
 

What are you most excited about for your career at Deloitte?

I am excited to continue to grow and to hopefully develop into a recognized hard-working professional that encompasses all of Deloitte’s values.
