In-production testing: The future of software testing
Part of the Architecting the Cloud podcast series
The concept of testing in-production systems has traditionally been a non-starter. However, companies are beginning to realize that testing live systems produces better results and helps build better systems in the long run.
Want better software testing? Do it in production
Traditionally, the software testing has been firmly planted in the staging process, so as not to disrupt in-production systems and functionality. However, by testing in staging only, developers may miss issues that only occur with live systems. In this episode, Mike Kavis and Split.io’s Talia Nassi discuss how savvy software companies are breaking tradition and moving their testing process from staging to production. According to Talia, in-production testing is the future because it’s where users experience the application, so it’s more effective if done safely. Mike and Talia also discuss what's required for safe in-production testing, and they debunk some production-testing myths and discuss how the emerging discipline of chaos engineering is related to production testing.
Something that I get asked a lot is, "Oh, but you can't performance test in production." Yes, you can, because the only way to know that you can withstand that much load...is to test it in production.
Talia Nassi is a developer advocate at Split.io, where she works closely with engineering teams globally to ship software more efficiently. She is also an international keynote speaker who delivers content on all things testing and quality.
Chaos engineering: Stress-testing the cloud
Cloud architectures are incredibly complex and it's often difficult to predict and prevent failures. Enter chaos engineering, which aims to discover cloud failure points, in in-production systems, before they become disasters.
Software testing in the age of cloud—new ideas and opportunities
Software testing isn't glamourous, but it's critical. It's also often misunderstood or siloed. However, DevOps has highlighted the importance of testing, and the cloud has transformed the testing process.
Put Cloud in context with the future of business and technology
Because cloud is never just about cloud, a podcast about cloud isn’t either. Our two hosts deliver two unique perspectives to help bring you closer to achieving what matters most—your possible.
For Cloud Professionals, hosted by David Linthicum, provides an enterprise-level, strategic look at key issues impacting clients’ businesses. David, ranked as the #1 cloud influencer in a recent Apollo Research report, has published 13 books on computing, written over 5,000 published articles and performed over 500 conference presentations, making his specialization in the power of cloud simply undeniable.
As a pioneer in cloud computing, Mike Kavis leads Architecting the Cloud, which offers insights from the POV of those who’ve had hands-on experience with cloud technology. Mike’s personal cloud journey includes leading the team that built the world's first high-speed transaction network in Amazon's public cloud—a project that ultimately won the 2010 AWS Global Startup Challenge.
